Acer Aspire 5610z laptop

by Paula
(NC)

I purchased an Acer Aspire 5610z laptop. I use it everyday for work and for the most part, I am satisfied with the purchase. I did have one minor problem with it and a couple of gripes. So here is my story.

After I had my laptop for about three months. I noticed when I set it down, it would just shut off. I mean completely and instantly power down. After a couple more months, it got worse. It would cut completely off every time I so much as moved it! Acer has a wonderful web site and they have a place where you can report any problems and they can give you feedback on what needs to be done about it.

The suggestion to me was that it could be one of many different reasons why the laptop was just shutting off like that. I thought maybe there might be some sort of short circuit, or something in it was grounding out. They told me to pack it up and ship it to them.... at my expense. Not to mention I would have to do without it until they could fix it and ship it back to me. This made me more determined than ever to figure it out myself because I use it so much, it would surely be missed.

I gave it a real close inspection and came to find out the problem was my DVD drive! It was working it's way loose. It just slides into place, much like a deck of cards and does not have screws or anything that holds it securely.

After traveling and moving it around, the DVD drive would work it's way out, just a bit, causing a bad connection and the laptop would instantly shut down. Easy for me to fix and the problem was solved!

My minor gripes with it:

1. It has a tendency to run hot and it is necessary to use a notebook cooler under it. I am fine with that, but I wish they had told me when I bought it.

2. It is not loud enough. For me to be able to watch a movie on it, I have to hook up external speakers. Fine when I am home, but annoying when I am traveling.

The Acer laptop was well worth the money, more than three years later I am still using it everyday. Acer has great tech support and a phone number you can call. They answered my phone calls in a timely manor and I did not stay on hold for an extended period of time. I will consider Acer again in the future.
