Loose Hinges on HP Mini 1000

by David Spradlin
(Dayton, Ohio)

We have approximately 50 of these Netbooks. I have found 4 so far with loose hinges.

It starts out with the end user reporting the top being very loose, upon inspection and removing the hinge cover, I have found 2 of them with 2 of the 4 screws completely out and the remaining screws extremely loose. The cover kept the screws from being completely lost. The other 2 Netbooks just had 4 loose screws.

One of the Netbooks has a broken monitor (about a 1 inch x 1/4 inch piece missing next to the right hinge). It doesn't take a rocket scientist to deduct that when the hinge became loose, it contacts the LCD screen and breaks the piece off.

HP is now saying the broken LCD is not covered because it is physical damage; however if it were not for the hinge issue, it wouldn't be broken.

This is where I am at this point, but this story will continue, as I research who else is having this problem.

HP Mini 1000 Speaker/Hinge Issue NEW
by: Microsoft Official ManufacturingTeam

This computer has its own wear and tear. The hinges screws re just very loose. HP did not design the laptop very well at all. I know this because many people who bring this thing in always have this issue and parents who brong this in alwas say there child disrespected or was dropping the device alot, but honestly it is not the persons fault its Hewlard Packard manufacturing erros which got this laptop taken off shelves. Anyone who gets this issue should immediatly take it to a repair service.

Same issue here...
by: Woody

At work we have two HP mini 1000 netbooks which are both experiencing the same issues. One of them became loose and on the other the little pressure-fit fasteners which the screws go into (which sit in cheap, thin plastic) completely broke off and damaged the plastic over the LCD screen. I took them apart only to realize that they both had two screws holding the screen hinges instead of the four which should be there. This is either laziness on HP's part or just another example of engineered obsolescence. I've never been a fan of HP, but either way I won't personally buy another HP product. Needless to say my ThinkPad won't have these issues ;)

HP mini 1000 hinge screw loose!
by: Ed

YEP! Looks like I have the same problem on the left side of the screen hinge! The screw there has come completely loose to the point that if the machine is tilted longitudinally side to side it can be heard inside the silver speaker cover.

Called HP. They said because it is out of warranty they charge $169 smackers to fix it! That sounds outrageous considering that another similar machine can be purchased BRAND NEW for another $100 more.

It would be a simple repair if only it were easy to get at that teensy screw! SHAME on HP for putting together so nice little machine, then blowing it with so flimsy a hinge!

If you've found out anything, please get back with me at edenkha@sbcglobal.net. Appreciatively Ed
