DSL Versus Cable Internet Showdown

There are many choices when it comes to your internet connection. Choosing between DSL versus Cable internet is certainly one of them.

There is a lot of debate over which one you should choose.

This is because a lot of your decision will be based on your service provider.

But to help you decide, here is a basic run-down of each.

DSL, which stands for Digital Subscriber Line, is a high-speed connection which runs through your telephone line.

It basically works very similar to dial-up, except it's much faster and better.

Cable internet is a little different. Instead of going through the phone lines it goes through your cable.

You will be given equipment that allows you to be able to connect your television and your internet together at the same time.

It's very easy. If you can hook up your television, you will be able to hook up your cable internet.

So Which One Is Better?

Is speed is your biggest priority then go with cable. DSL connection speeds will vary depending on how close you are to your provider.

But with that aside, which one is better will be based solely on your situation.

Find out as much as you can about your DSL and cable service providers. Find out how much each of them cost. Also, ask around and see what others are saying about them.

If everyone you speak with has no complaints with a particular service, then certainly consider them as your top option.

What About Equipment?

Whether you choose DSL versus cable internet, you are going to have to get a new modem that supports that connection.

Often times, your DSL company will include a DSL modem as part of their start-up package.

Cable companies do this also. But much more infrequently.

Make sure you purchase the correct modem for internet connection! While there are some modems that handle both DSL and cable, most of them do not.

I have had both DSL and cable modems before, and here are my top choices...

For DSL, I would suggest purchasing a Speedstream DSL modem from eBay. This is only if your DSL provider doesn't give you a modem when you sign up.

For cable, I have had great success with the Motorola Surfboard. It's fast and reliable and I have had no complains with it.
