Learning how to set up wireless internet is much easier then you might think. Believe me...

If I can do it. Anyone can!

The most important thing that you need to know at first is what things you need to buy and what things you already have.

The first thing that you need to have in order to get wireless internet is a wireless networking adapter. If you own a newer laptop, this is probably inside your computer as we speak.

You can find out if you have a network adapter by clicking here.

If you don't own a wireless card don't panic.

You can easily purchase one separately. They are relatively inexpensive. The best place to purchase a wireless card is eBay (opens new window).

There are two important thing things to look for in your wireless card.

1. Make sure it is a 802.11g card. They have 802.11b, 802.11a, and several others. Having an 802.11g will enable you to connect at much faster speeds and from farther away.

2. Purchase a wireless card that connects in the PCMCIA slot. By following the link above, you will be taken directly to what I am talking about.

The next thing you are going to want to get is high speed internet. It is possible to have wireless internet with dial-up, but it will be so slow it simply isn't worth it.

In order to have high speed internet, you are going to need a cable or dsl modem depending on what internet you have. This type of modem will not be found in your laptop.

There are many different types and brands of modems out there. I have had no problems or complaints with the Motorola Surfboard. It's easy to set up and has lasted a long time now.

Other well known modems are Linksys and Netgear.

You can get cable/dsl modems much cheaper on eBay. But make sure that all of the equipment comes in the box. Either order one that says new or contact the seller and ask them if all of the wires and cables are included.

The next thing on how to set up wireless internet is getting a wireless router (opens new window).

This is the piece of equipment that makes things wireless. You can have high speed internet without a router. But to be able to connect multiple computers and have your laptop have a wireless connection you are going to have to purchase a router.

Fortunately, routers are getting cheaper and cheaper by the day now.

You can certainly find a nice wireless router on eBay for under $30.

Similar to the wireless card, make sure you get a router that is 802.11g. This will allow you to connect faster and from farther away.

Also, try to look for a router that has a connection of at least 54 Mbps. If several people will be using the internet at one time you may consider getting a router even faster then that.

Once you have all of the necessary equipment, it's time to hook everything up.

It's hard to explain precisely how to do this because each modem and router may need to be hooked up differently.

But the main steps on how to set up wireless internet are this...

1. Hook up wherever your internet is coming from to your modem. Your internet source will vary depending on whether you have Cable or DSL.

2. Connect your modem to your router. This is the essential part of making wireless possible.

3. Turn on whatever computer you have that has a wireless card and enjoy your wireless internet experience!
